Who We Are
Pivot & Pen was founded by Eonica Smith, a communication strategist, and researcher with graduate-level training in communication, culture, and power. Her work is informed by both academic research and lived experience, allowing her to support leaders, creators, and organizations navigating high-stakes conversations, public visibility, and complex identity dynamics with clarity and intention.
With a background rooted in communication studies and real-world leadership experience, Eonica has spent years researching how Black women and other marginalized voices are often misunderstood, mischaracterized, or silenced — not because of lack of skill, but because of how communication is filtered through bias.
In addition to her work in PR and communication strategy, Eonica has a long-standing interest in adoption, reunification, and identity-centered communication. This work informs Pivot & Pen’s belief that communication is not just about visibility, but about dignity, understanding, and being heard; especially in spaces where silence has lasting impact.
Pivot & Pen was created to change that.
We believe
At Pivot & Pen, we believe communication is a skill; not a personality trait. Too often, people are labeled or misunderstood not because of who they are, but because of how their words are filtered through bias, power, and context. Silence is not neutrality, and being misunderstood is not a personal failure. Clarity, when used intentionally, becomes one of the most powerful forms of self-advocacy.
WHAT YOU STAND FOR
Pivot & Pen does not teach clients to shrink, soften, or assimilate in order to be accepted. We teach them to communicate with intention, navigate difficult conversations with confidence, and own their narrative in spaces that were not designed with them in mind. Our work is about helping people be both seen and heard — without sacrificing their identity, values, or voice.
WHO THIS IS FOR
Pivot & Pen is for leaders, creators, organizations, and families who understand that communication shapes perception, trust, and opportunity. Our work is especially aligned with Black women and underrepresented voices navigating spaces where miscommunication carries real consequences.
This is not a fit for those seeking surface-level PR, viral shortcuts, or quick fixes without strategy.
If you’re ready to communicate with intention and own your narrative, we’d love to explore working together.
